Employees of the medical department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were assaulted and abused by woman who was diagnosed with Covid-19 and her relatives on Wednesday when they asked her to get admitted in the isolation ward.
According to the victim identified as Sony Amrut Gavli (34) who is a nurse has been working for BMC since March 2020 when the state was going through a lockdown owing to the increasing number of Covid-19 positive cases. Gavli in her complaint said that a part of her duty includes contacting Covid-19 positive patients and taking them to BMC’s isolation wards. Gavli said that the incident occurred on Wednesday when Gavli was at the medical centre at Anand Nagar in Jogesjwari at 9am. She said that she had received a message on their what’s app group created by the Indian Council of Medical Research that a resident of Vikas Nagar in Jogeshwari identified as Heena Shaikh had tested positive and that she should be contacted and taken to the isolation ward.
“At the time a doctor Neelam Nishad a thtee nurses including me were present at the Anand Nagar centre,” said Gavli.
At 11 am Gavli contacted Shaikh on her mobile phone but ended up taking to a man who informed her that they would contact her in a while.
Gavli alleged that at 11.10am she received a call where the caller asked her to come to their area so that they could direct her to their house.
On the direction of Dr Nishad we went to Vikas Nagar for polio vaccination of kids there. “We were carrying on the vaccination camp when two women entered the camp without wearing masks. They introduced themselves as Heena Shaikh and Shirin Shaikh,” said Gavli.
Gavli added that Shirin abused them and said that they were fooling Heena as she had been tested negative for Covid-19. When Gavli and the three other nurses Rekha Chincholi, Rajni Shinde and Roopa Uppar asked Shirin to calm down, she assaulted them and slapped them, “She abused us and a man who was with the accused threatened us of lodging a police complaint,” added Gavli.
The four women including Gavli then approached the Oshiwara police station and registered a case of assult and threatening against Shirin, Heena and an unidentified man.
“We have detained the women and are investigating the matter based on the complaint filed by the BMC employees,” said a police officer from Oshiwara police station.
