A 32-year-old woman, brutally raped and had an unknown object inserted in her private parts in Sakinaka, passed away at a government hospital Saturday.
The accused, identified as Mohan Chouhan, 45-year-old, has been arrested and booked for rape and murder. He had earlier been charged with attempted murder.
The woman, who was homeless, was allegedly assaulted by Chouhan inside a tempo on Khairani road in Sakinaka around 3am on Friday. The accused had inserted some object in her private parts, which had led to heavy bleeding.
A watchman who saw the woman being beaten up alerted the police control room. A Sakinaka police team had reached the spot.

After the incident, Chouhan fled from the spot and was tracked in Kurla based on CCTV footage. He was arrested on Friday evening. The police are checking if he has a prior criminal record. Chouhan frequents the area and does odd jobs.
‘We have booked the accused under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder). He has been traced and arrested. He will be produced before a magistrate court on Saturday,’ said Balwant Deshmukh, senior police inspector, Sakinaka police station.
