New Delhi: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday took charge of the ministry and said that the aim is to.promote the economic growth of the country and make India a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
“We want to make India Viksit Bharat by 2047, huge new opportunities to youth,” Goyal said.
Goyal took the charge of the ministry for the second time and held a meeting with officials to take stock of the challenges and road ahead.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada also took charge of the portfolio.
Goyal, who won his debut Lok Sabha poll from the Mumbai North constituency in the 2024 General Elections, had held the post of BJP’s national treasurer and helmed various ministries including railways, commerce and industry, textiles, and consumer affairs, food and public distribution. He is credited with India signing free trade agreements with Australia, the UAE, Mauritius and European Free Trade Association.
Under his watch, India launched Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes worth Rs 1.97 lakh crore to lift the share of manufacturing in GDP to 25% by 2047 from about 17% currently.
However, he faces challenges to drive exports to $2 trillion by 2030 amid geopolitical uncertainty and negotiate complicated FTAs with the UK and the EU.
There is also a need to push laggards like auto products, ACC batteries, speciality steel in the PLI schemes.
