The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, on Thursday, paid tribute to the victims of Kallakurichi hooch tragedy wherein at least 34 persons died after consuming spurious liquor. They also paid tribute to those who died in Kuwait fire and deceased lawmakers.|
The House members reportedly observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect when Speaker M. Appavu commenced the brief session by mentioning the departed in obituary remarks.
Expressing shock over the deaths in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, the Speaker said the state government was taking steps to contain the sale of spurious liquor, and following the incident, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin initiated steps to provide medical treatment to the affected.
In addition to expressing shock and anguish over the loss of innocent lives in the Kuwait fire–particularly the seven from Tamil Nadu–Appavu also read out the resolution and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, reported PTI.
The House reportedly paid tributes to former lawmakers, including N. Pugazhendhi, who had represented the Vikravandi assembly constituency, and C. Velayuthan, among others, who had passed away.
As per the agency reports, the House was later adjourned for the day.
Discussions on the demand for grants for various government departments will commence on Friday, and the session will conclude on June 29 ahead of the Vikravandi by-poll.
Tamil Nadu: Over 25 deaths after drinking spurious liquor
At least 25 people have died and more than 60 have been hospitalised in Tamil Nadu`s Kallakurichi district as a result of spurious liquor consumption, officials said on Thursday. The death toll is expected to increase. MS Prasanth, the Kallakurichi District Collector, paid a visit to individuals receiving treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, reported ANI.
According to the report, Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock over the incident and stated that action has been taken against officials who failed to prevent it.
“I was shocked and saddened by the deaths of people who consumed adulterated alcohol in Kallakurichi. Those responsible have been arrested, and action has been taken against the officials who failed to prevent this,” Stalin said in a post on X.
“Immediate action will be taken if the public reports such crimes. These crimes, which ruin society, will be suppressed with an iron fist,” he added.
