NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met with the bipartisan US delegation, which included former US House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members who arrived in India on Tuesday.
On Wednesday evening, the bipartisan delegation engaged in discussions with external affairs minister Jaishankar and foreign secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
The US Congressional delegation, headed by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, reached Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, on Tuesday. The delegation, comprising six prominent US Congressional members, namely “former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Mariannette Miller, Gregory Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Jim McGovern and Ami Bera,” also had an audience with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Wednesday.
Representative McCaul presented the Dalai Lama with a framed copy of ‘The Resolve Tibet Act,’ a bipartisan bill recently passed by the US Congress aimed at strengthening US support for Tibet.
Last week, the US Congress approved the bill, urging Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve their dispute over the status and governance of Tibet.
Prior to their meeting with the Dalai Lama, the US delegates attended a public felicitation programme at the main Tibetan temple. Children showcased Tibetan culture through performances at the felicitation ceremony held in the courtyard of the Tsuglagkhang Complex in Dharamshala. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Dalai Lama presented a Buddha Statue to Pelosi, as reported by the office of the Dalai Lama.
