NEW DELHI: A woman and her 18-year-old daughter were assaulted by their neighbours over a water dispute in Navi Mumbai’s Panvel area on Thursday, police said on Saturday.
The attack, allegedly triggered by suspicions that the victims had complained about water wastage in the locality, has led to a case being filed against eight members of a family.
According to the police, the accused physically assaulted the woman and her daughter, with the teenager being stripped and beaten in public. During the attack, casteist slurs were allegedly used against the victims, as per the FIR.
The police have registered charges under sections 74 (assault with intent to outrage modesty) and 76 (assault with intent to disrobe), along with other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
No arrests have been made so far, and investigations are underway.
