THANE: A police officer suffered head injuries after a mob attacked policemen at Ambivli railway station. The officers were returning to Mumbai after apprehending a chain snatcher from the notorious Irani Basti area, a famous hideout for chain snatchers, near Ambivli railway station.
The accused pelted stones at the police at Ambivli railway station to free the chain snatcher. The relatives of the accused took him away from police custody.
After the incident, the local Khadakpada police registered a case against 20 to 25 people and took four of them into custody. The search for the remaining accused has started.
The incident took place late Wednesday night when a team from Andheri MIDC police in Mumbai went to Ambivli and took an accused involved in several chain-snatching cases into custody. They were taking him back to Mumbai.
Meanwhile, his relatives chased the police to free the accused and attacked them at Ambivli railway station. Some minor children were also involved in this incident.
In the attack, API Yashwant Palve from MIDC police station in Andheri East received head injuries. To apprehend the chain snatcher, a team of three officers and 13 constables went to Ambivli. They caught him, but they faced stone pelting at Ambivli railway station, during which the snatcher escaped.
The Mumbai police said that the team has not returned yet. They are looking for the chain snatcher.
Atul Zende, DCP of Kalyan zone, said, “In this case, an offence has been registered against 20 to 25 people, and four accused have been taken into custody.”
