MANGALURU: As many as 479 Shuddh Ganga drinking water units were installed in the state under the Shri Kshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Programme (SKDRDP) since 2009 to supply pure drinking water, said Hemavathi Veerendra Heggade, President of SKDRDP Jnana Vikasa Programme. Those Shuddh Ganga units provide potable drinking water to 5.91 lakh people every day, she said at a meeting of Shuddh Ganga unit supervisors in Dharmasthala.
Hemavathi V. Heggade emphasised that water is a precious natural resource essential for human survival and well-being. She highlighted how water quality directly affects public health. In response to health concerns arising from contaminated water consumption, particularly affecting women and children, the project established water purification facilities in water-stressed regions.
The Shuddh Ganga units successfully protected community health through their purified water supply. Women, who typically handle household water management, are now ensuring better health for their families by utilising clean water. She encouraged supervisors to raise awareness about the benefits of purified water usage and promote its continued consumption as a beneficial practice.
SKDRDP, under the leadership of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade and Hemavathi V. Heggade, launched various community welfare initiatives, including the Shuddha Ganga project.
According to SKDRDP executive director Anilkumar S S, the Shuddha Ganga programme aims to promote healthier living through access to clean water and has been consistently delivering purified water to communities.
