Kalyan: In a shocking incident at Regency Complex in Titwala, a pack of stray dogs attacked an elderly woman, injuring her severly. The dogs dragged the woman on the road for around 50 metres for more than two minutes and bit her at many places until a watchman of the building saw the incident and chased the dogs away.
The woman was admitted in a critical condition, first to the local Goveli Primary Hospital, then Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, and later to Kalwa’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital. She is now at JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where she is still said to be in a critical condition.
Police said the name of the woman and where she lives have not been ascertained yet. Her condition is so critical that she is unable to speak. Police said even the relatives of the woman have not come forward yet. The incident took place at around 2.30am on Friday in the posh Regency Complex located in Titwala near Kalyan. Four dogs surrounded the woman, knocked her down, and started pulling and biting her.
The CCTV installed in the building shows that the elderly woman was trying to escape from the dogs, but the four dogs were not allowing her to recover and kept dragging and biting her.
More than 2 minutes of CCTV footage shows the dogs constantly biting the woman until the security guard working there came forward to intervene. After rescuing the woman, the security guard of the complex, with the help of local Kalyan Taluka police, admitted the woman to Goveli Primary Hospital. Doctors there found that the woman was badly injured and immediately sent her to the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar for better treatment. From there, the doctors later sent the woman to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, from where she has been moved to JJ Hospital.
Dr Deeplakshmi Kamble told TOI, “The woman could be around 68 years old, and is badly injured. She has suffered severe head injuries in the attack, in which her brain was also injured. Apart from this, the dog also bit the woman’s hands and legs.”
The Kalyan Taluka Police, which is investigating the incident, suspects the woman could be a beggar. Suresh Kadam, senior police inspector, said, “The woman is still unable to tell about herself due to her serious condition, but we are trying to find out about her relatives.”
