Mumbai: The state told the Bombay high court on Tuesday that it will provide a man with police protection without charges until the end of the trial before the Kalyan session court in the killing of his son. The father had received threats from the accused.
Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Shivkumar Dige took note of the Dec 9 letter from DCP (special branch), Thane, to the Reserve Police Inspector, “for providing police protection to the petitioner till disposal of the case in question without payment/charges.” They adjourned the hearing to Feb 11 for a further update.
The petition was by Dombivli resident Vandar Patil (72), a recipient of the 1984 Presidential Award for saving the lives of 7-8 persons. He challenged the Thane police commissioner’s April 14 order withdrawing protection and an April 24 notice to pay Rs 1.18 crore in outstanding protection fees for 2016-23. In Feb 2002, Patil received a Rs 10 lakh extortion call from a man who identified himself as Manchekar gang member.
After his family was manhandled by 20-22 persons in March 2003, Patil was given police protection until 2006. His son Vijay was murdered in 2007. He was again provided protection. Upon release on bail, five accused open threatened him and his younger son.
On Dec 2, police report said Patil received threats from the accused. It agreed to give protection on payment of charges. The judges questioned if there is a threat perception, why should Patil pay for protection. Patil’s advocates, Sanjiv Sawant and Heramb Kadam, had expressed his inability to pay.
