Mumbai: An FIR is yet to be registered regarding the hacking of 63 betel nut trees, which were planted on the median of New Link Road in Andheri West, to clear the view for hoardings on the road in Oct. Following the incident, the BMC K-West ward garden department registered an NC at the Amboli police station.
The betel nut trees, planted on the median of New Link Road in Andheri West, between the RTO signal junction and Maruti Suzuki service station, were cut to clear the view for hoardings on the road. Filmmaker and activist Ashoke Pandit said, “I don’t understand why the police are yet to register an FIR despite BMC’s letters to the police and provisions in law to register an FIR. Even the court has approved the registration of an FIR.”
Pandit found large betel nut trees, which were planted on the median on this road, hacked. He filed an RTI application with the BMC, which revealed that 63 trees were hacked to death by the hoarding mafia, as they were obstructing the view of the hoardings. The trees were between 12 and 15 feet tall and were planted by an infrastructure firm, which has a residential project in the vicinity.
The BMC K/West Garden Department even managed to obtain photographs of the men who carried out the hacking of the trees, including that of the vehicle used for carrying the hacked portions. The details, including the photographs, were submitted to the police, who registered an NC. “The police are yet to file an FIR for reasons best known to them,” said a BMC official.
While Amboli police station senior inspector Sadashiv Nikam was not available for comment, a police official said that they received approval from the court for the registration of an FIR, but they are investigating the matter.
