BJP MLA Rahul Narwekar to be new speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly

MUMBAI: BJP MLA Rahul Narwekar will be the new Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
Narwekar, who was elected for a second consecutive term from the Colaba assembly constituency in Mumbai, has been elected unopposed. He was the only MLA to file a nomination for the Speaker’s post.
He filed his nomination on Sunday, accompanied by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Senior BJP leaders Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Chandrakant Patil were also present.
Narwekar previously served as the Assembly Speaker during the two-year tenure of the Mahayuti government.
On the directions of the Supreme Court, he ruled on the Shiv Sena (UBT) petition seeking the disqualification of 16 MLAs from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. He recognized the Shiv Sena led by Shinde as the legitimate political party but did not disqualify the MLAs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction.
Similarly, in the case of the NCP (Sharad Pawar) and NCP (Ajit Pawar) factions, he recognized the Ajit Pawar faction as the legitimate party but did not disqualify the MLAs of the other faction.
Narwekar will be formally appointed as the Speaker on Monday, the last day of the three-day special assembly session.
