MUMBAI: Mohammed Islam Ansari (49), a resident of Kurla, was on his way to the police station to sort out some documents for his private taxi when he was caught in the accident. He was expected to be back home in around 15 minutes, but never arrived.
Ansari was the only critical patient transferred from Bhabha Hospital to Sion Hospital, where he was declared dead on Tuesday. “He was sent to Sion Hospital around 1am, and by 6am on Tuesday, doctors declared him dead,” said his son Irfan.
From 9pm to midnight, the family remained unaware that Mohammed had been in an accident, having received no call from the hospital. Irfan recalled the agonising Monday night for him and his three siblings, as they repeatedly called their father, but there was no answer.
“For the first hour, we thought he might be busy and would return home,” Irfan said. It was only after hearing of the accident that they realised Mohammed might be one of the victims, given he was in the same area.
After running from pillar to post for 30 minutes and showing his picture at the hospital, the family was finally taken to him.
