THANE: The much-awaited railway overbridge work near Diva station is likely to face further delays as the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is yet to acquire crucial land parcels on the west side of the suburb for constructing the landing of the flyover, officials informed.
The two-lane rail overbridge (RoB) is 750 m long, connecting the east and west sides of the city and crossing over the tracks. It consists of three parts: a 103 m portion over the tracks, a 340 m landing on the east side, while the rest is towards the west side of the city. Work on the Rs 39 crore project, which started in 2019, was to be finished by 2022, but the completion date still seems far off.
While the landings will be constructed by the Thane corporation, the portion over the tracks will be built by the Central Railways (CR). The CR completed a major part of the work under its ambit, while the corporation acquired land on the east side and started construction in 2021. However, work on the west side is pending as the land required for the landing is not yet acquired.
A civic official said, “We require roughly 5000 sqm of land near Diva west station for the access roads and landings, but the owners are unwilling to negotiate as another parcel of land in their ownership in the under-developed area is also blocked under some reservation and may seek some relaxation. The occupants also rejected our initial proposal for TDR, claiming it to be unviable. We are considering acquiring the land through the revenue department. A final meeting with stakeholders is scheduled sometime this week.”
Meanwhile, the delay in the RoB completion leads to the level crossing being operated nearly 60 times daily for a few minutes each, impacting the schedules of CR suburban and outstation trains connecting Mumbai with Thane suburbs and major cities of the country.
