Mumbai: In a thoughtful initiative, the National Service Scheme (NSS) of the Mumbai University has issued an appeal to girl students, requesting them to donate their ponytails to create wigs for cancer patients who lose their hair during treatment.
The NSS letter says the loss of hair carries profound emotional weight. For many, it’s not just hair—it’s a symbol of self and confidence, suddenly taken away.
A mass hair donation drive will be held from 9:30am to 11:30am on Saturday, Feb 15, 2025, at Azad Maidan near CSMT. The event promises to transform compassion into action. Hair loss is a harsh side effect of cancer treatment, one that deters some women from seeking therapy altogether. Wigs, often seen as a luxury, remain financially out of reach for many patients. This initiative aims to change that narrative.
Sushil Shinde, NSS coordinator at Mumbai University, emphasised the impact of the drive in his appeal, stating: “The HindAyan Foundation has organised this hair donation event on Feb 15. Anyone who wishes to donate their hair can contribute to making wigs for cancer patients.”
The project’s visionary, writer and world circumnavigator Vishnudas Chapke, said, “Since 2022, HindAyan has been organising cycling expeditions across cities like Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Thane, Mumbai and Pune with support from the ministry of youth affairs and sports. This year, our theme is ‘Awareness about Cancer.’ But awareness alone isn’t enough—we wanted to take concrete action.” — Hemali Chhapia
