NEW DELHI: The parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expressed disappointment on Friday over the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s handling of the case. They said they were heartbroken after a Kolkata court granted bail to two key suspects in the case, describing it as a failure of the “system”.
“We thought the CBI would bring those responsible to justice, but with the accused out on bail, it feels like the system is failing us,” said the victim’s mother.
The victim’s father said, “We trusted the CBI to deliver justice, but now we are left wondering if we will ever see justice for our daughter.”
A Sealdah court on Friday granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of the Tala police station.
The CBI, entrusted with the investigation by the Calcutta high court, failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period, paving the way for the accused to secure bail.
Victim’s mother lamented the delays and said, “Every day, we fear this will turn into another case where the powerful escape punishment.”
The murder shocked the state, leading to widespread protests across West Bengal. The doctor’s body was found in the hospital on August 9. Allegations of police mishandling prompted the Calcutta High Court to hand over the case to the CBI.
Mondal had been accused of delaying the filing of the FIR, while Ghosh faced charges of tampering with evidence. Speaking outside the court, Mondal’s lawyer confirmed that his client would soon be released. Meanwhile, Ghosh, also accused in a separate financial irregularities case, will remain in custody despite being granted bail in the rape-murder case.
