Former DSP (STF) Shailendra Singh, who recommended the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) charges against Mukhtar Ansari, claims that he had to bear the brunt of rubbing those in power at the time the wrong way.
“Twenty years ago, in 2004, Ansari’s empire was at its peak. I had arrested Ansari after I got to know that he was going to buy an LMG (light machine gun) from an Army deserter.I took a stand and ensured that he went to jail. At that time, I even recommended Pota for him,” said Singh, who alleged that he was forced to quit because of Ansari’s clout.
Singh claimed that the weapon seized by him was the only LMG that has been ever recovered in UP till date.
Singh said that it had all started in Jan 2004, when a shootout took place between Ansari and the then Mohammadabad MLA Krishnanand Rai. According to Singh, Ansari had told his henchmen that the LMG would be able to penetrate Rai’s bulletproof SUV. Singh and his team arrested two peopleand recovered the LMG on Jan 25, 2004, after which Pota case was filed against Ansari.
