LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick off BJP’s campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in UP from Meerut on Sunday. Modi will address the rally in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary.
This would be the first occasion when Modi and Chaudhary would be sharing the stage, a decade after BJP decimated the RLD in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.RLD had joined the BJP-led NDA in Feb after Modi announced the Bharat Ratna for former PM and Jayant’s grandfather Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Coincidentally, Jayant received the Bharat Ratna for his grandfather from President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Saturday. In a tweet on X, Modi said, “Bharat Ratna for Chaudhary Charan Singh is a recognition of his contributions to India’s development, particularly in agriculture and rural development.
Meerut, sources said, has been chosen strategically for Modi’s rally. It’s a constituency with a sizable population of Jats and Gurjars and BJP is trying to win the votes of both the communities, especially after forming an alliance with the RLD.
In 2019, too, Modi had chosen Meerut to start his poll campaign. Jayant is learnt to have started his campaign by camping in a host of parliamentary seats including Baghpat and Bijnor from where his party would be contesting in alliance with the BJP.
BJP has fielded actor Arun Govil, who played the role of Ram in the TV serial Ramayan. Campaigning for Govil earlier this week in Meerut, Yogi Adityanath had said that Govil breathed life into Lord Ram’s character in Ramayan and would now become the identity of Meerut. “Arun Govil will now create history in Meerut,” he had said.
Yogi embarked on a whirlwind tour of 15 districts of western UP in five days. His tour began from Mathura on March 27 and will conclude with an election meeting in Rampur on March 31.
The rallies of other top BJP leaders including home minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda, too, are being planned to stir up a high decibel election campaign, especially in west UP where polling is due in the first three phases.
UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary said the PM will address a public meeting in Meerut and give a record of the past 10 years of his govt. He added that BJP govt and Prime Minister Modi have not only made promises but have also fulfilled them.
