Mumbai: Two persons were arrested by the Khar police for duping women and senior citizens by luring them with the prospect of receiving donations.
According to the police, the accused would approach their target and claim that his employer was giving out cash to celebrate the birth of a child in his family. The target was then taken into an isolated lane. Here, he/ she was asked to remove their jewellery and put it away in their bag “to appear impoverished” to be able to claim the donation. Using sleight of hand, the accused would later steal the jewellery.
In the latest incident on Nov 27, the accused duped a 73-year-old woman at Khar Danda in a similar manner and stole her 2 tola gold chain, 1 tola gold earrings, and half tola ear ornaments from her purse.
After an FIR was registered, a police team tracked down the two accused and arrested them. They were identified as Arjun Kale, 24, and Balaji Pawar, 20. Both are pavement dwellers. Police recovered valuables worth Rs 1.31 lakh stolen from the senior citizen at Khar Danda.
Besides this, police found five prior offences registered against the accused at the Khar police station in the past. Valuables worth Rs 3.22 lakh stolen in these cases were also recovered.
