Mumbai: A 40-year-old beautician from a well-known club in South Mumbai was arrested by the Colaba police for allegedly removing a 6.9-carat diamond-studded finger ring worth Rs 20 lakh from an 83-year-old South Mumbai resident while he was having a pedicure and manicure in the club’s salon last month.
The Colaba police arrested the beautician, identified as Sarika, and booked her under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. They have initiated an investigation into the matter. The octogenarian, residing at Maker Tower (A), Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, lodged a complaint with the Colaba Police last week.
Recounting the incident, he told the police that he went to Restro Salon & Wellness, where he booked an appointment for a manicure and pedicure at 11:30am on Nov 17. His son, Amit Ramsinghani, dropped him off at the venue.
During the salon session, a staff member named Sarika, performed a manicure on him, while another younger employee attended to his pedicure. He said that his eyes were closed for most of the procedure and he noticed afterward that the gold and diamond ring—gifted to him by his late wife—was missing from his left ring finger. “When I confronted Sarika, she claimed that I was not wearing a ring when I arrived, but I am certain I was,” the victim told the police. He emphasised that the ring was tight and could only be removed with the application of soap or oil, which Sarika used during the manicure process.
