NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) faces a financial hurdle as it received a notice from the income-tax department, demanding payment of Rs 11 crore in “dues” for using an old PAN card in tax filings over recent years, sources said on Friday.
Reportedly, the Left party is seeking legal counsel to contest the tax authorities’ notice, which includes penalties and interest due to discrepancies in the use of the outdated PAN card.
“We are seeking legal assistance and consulting our lawyers,” a senior CPI leader informed PTI.
This development comes in the wake of similar challenges faced by other political entities. The Congress recently disclosed receiving I-T notices for dues exceeding Rs 1,823 crore, while Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale asserted receiving 11 I-T notices within the past 72 hours.
Amidst these developments, the Congress has accused the BJP-led Centre of attempting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
