MUMBAI: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya lodged a formal complaint with the Mumbai Police Commissioner regarding Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap‘s controversial remarks about the Election Commission of India. The complaint highlighted Jagtap’s alleged derogatory comment where he referred to the ECI as BJP’s ‘kutta’. He also wrote a letter to ECI about it.
Somaiya emphasised that such remarks demonstrate Congress’s growing frustration and their attempts to discredit the electoral body. He urged appropriate legal action against Jagtap for his disrespectful comments towards a constitutional authority.
The opposition’s concerns about voter counts and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) intensified following their significant defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. These parties consistently questioned the integrity of the electoral process, despite the ECI’s assurances about the system’s reliability.
The recent assembly elections saw the BJP-led alliance, including Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction and Ajit Pawar’s NCP group, secure a commanding majority with 230 seats in the 288-member assembly. This decisive victory strengthened the coalition’s position in Maharashtra politics.
However, despite their overwhelming success, the alliance partners are yet to reach a consensus on the Chief Minister’s position. Political observers note that this delay in leadership selection reflects the complex negotiations taking place between the coalition partners.
The incident sparked broader discussions about political discourse and respect for constitutional bodies. Several political analysts suggest that such confrontational rhetoric could potentially impact the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, where both parties are expected to compete fiercely for control of India’s richest civic body.
