Intense rainfall on Monday led to artificial flooding across Mangaluru and parts of the Dakshina Kannada district, causing significant challenges for commuters, including school and office-goers. In Mangaluru City, several streets and low-lying areas were waterlogged, while basements of residential and commercial buildings were inundated. The torrential rain even disrupted a grievance meeting chaired by Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa, as water entered the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat hall, according to a TNN report.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have predicted widespread rainfall in the district due to Cyclone Fengal. An orange alert has been issued, forecasting heavy rain in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts until Tuesday morning. In response, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M.P. and Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K. declared a holiday for all anganwadis, primary schools, high schools, and PU colleges, including government, aided, and private institutions, as reported by TNN.
The deputy commissioners have instructed officials to take all necessary precautions to protect lives and livestock. Local bodies, including gram panchayats, are on high alert to address potential emergencies. Heads of schools and colleges have been urged to inspect the structural integrity of their buildings. Residents have been advised to stay away from water bodies and electrical lines, while fishermen are prohibited from venturing into the sea, with those already at sea directed to return immediately.
Schools in Puducherry Closed Amid Heavy Rainfall
According to an ANI report, Puducherry has also declared a holiday for schools and colleges on December 3 due to heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal, Education Minister A. Namachivayam announced. ANI reported Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy stating that the government will provide ₹5,000 in relief to affected ration cardholders and ₹30,000 per hectare for farmers facing crop damage. The cyclone caused severe flooding, particularly around the Sankaraparani River, submerging over 200 homes in NR Nagar. Rescue efforts by the Indian Army and NDRF are underway, with boats deployed to evacuate stranded residents. Additionally, ₹10,000 has been allocated to repair 50 damaged fishing boats.
No Holiday Notice Issued for Bengaluru Schools Despite Heavy Rain Forecast
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Bengaluru, with lightning and downpours expected tomorrow. However, no holiday announcement has been made for schools in the city, leaving parents frustrated with the lack of action by authorities. On Monday, while parents anticipated an update, school closures were announced only for Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.
IMD Forecasts Reduced Rainfall for Karnataka, Heavy Showers for Kerala and Coastal Regions
IMD officials anticipate a reduction in rainfall starting the third day. Meanwhile, substantial rainfall is forecast for Kerala, driven by Cyclone Fengal, which has weakened into a low-pressure system over north interior Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka. This system is expected to shift and potentially strengthen, likely reemerging over the southeast and east-central Arabian Sea near the Kerala and northern Karnataka coasts by December 3. Kerala is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall across many areas, with isolated regions bracing for heavy downpours and storms.
