Mumbai: In a novel punishment, Western Railway directed five youths caught filming reels at Bhayander railway station to produce videos promoting social awareness and adherence to railway safety norms. The five, aged between 20 and 24, were caught endangering lives by creating content on railway tracks and premises, which they later uploaded to platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Western Railway arrested the youths — Dhruv Dubey, Ayan Ali, Rishi Kumar, Mohammad Toyab Sheikh, and Bharat Purohit — after receiving a tip-off from the Mumbai Central control room. The group was caught in the act at Bhayander station under the supervision of RPF officer Rohtas Singh.
During interrogation, the offenders confessed to filming unauthorised videos to attract advertising opportunities, admitting they were unaware of the gravity of their actions. Their behaviour violated Sections 147 and 145(b) of the Railway Act, prompting the authorities to issue notices under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The accused were produced before a magistrate and released on bail.
In an effort to turn their punishment into a learning opportunity, Western Railway ordered them to create videos educating the public about the dangers of trespassing on railway tracks and the importance of adhering to safety rules. The youths were instructed to upload these awareness videos to their social media accounts to counteract the unsafe trend of filming near tracks.
“Railway tracks are meant exclusively for train operations. Activities like filming reels or taking selfies near tracks significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents. We will continue to take strict action against such violations,” an RPF official stated. The youths have since apologised for their reckless behaviour and pledged to avoid such activities in the future. Western Railway hopes this initiative will discourage others from endangering lives for the sake of social media content.
