Nvidia, the Silicon Valley-based chipmaker defended its strategies in the competitive market for chips to power artificial intelligence amid reports that the US is investigating whether the company has violated antitrust laws.
“Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them,” a spokesperson told AFP.
Despite the availability of alternatives, Nvidia is widely regarded as the frontrunner in AI chip technology, although competitors are actively striving to challenge its position.
According to Bloomberg and other media sources, US antitrust authorities are intensifying their scrutiny of Nvidia’s practices, particularly whether the company has made it difficult for customers to switch to competitors’ GPUs or other AI chips. As part of the investigation, legally binding questions have reportedly been sent to Nvidia and other chip manufacturers.
The world’s largest tech companies, including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Tesla, and Amazon, have invested heavily in Nvidia’s advanced AI chips and software to develop and deploy their ChatGPT-style AI models.
These companies rely on Nvidia’s technology for training generative AI models and handling the intensive computing workloads required for the implementation of this new technology.
Nvidia shares plummeted by 9.5% on Wednesday erasing $278.9 billion in market value—the largest single-day loss for any US stock in history. The stock has now dropped 14% over three sessions since its earnings report fell short of high expectations.
Nvidia’s recent quarterly report announced sales reaching an impressive $30 billion, surpassing expectations, however, this growth was slower compared to the rapid pace observed in previous quarters.
