A 55-year-old man, who was wanted in a murder case, was arrested from the Vasai area after 36 years.
The Manickpur police in Vasai on Wednesday arrested a 55-year-old man who was wanted in a murder case and had been on the run for 36 years from the Vasai area.
According to the police, on November 30, 1988, one Sameer Akbar Ali, a Navghar resident, was murdered over a business rivalry by seven people, including the arrested accused Clement Simon Lobo alias Munna. The killers dumped the body in bushes and fled as the Vasali police registered a murder case.
Six of the accused were arrested, but Munna escaped to Bahrain. Years later, he returned and started living in Vasai with a new identity, said a police officer.
Munna’s name caught the attention of Manikpur police, who were carrying out a special drive against wanted accused on the orders of zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Pournima Chugule-Shringi.
Senior Inspector Raju Mane received specific inputs that a murder accused was hiding in Vasai. Following this, a police team arrested Munna from his house in Vasai. Munna told the police that he was 19 years old when he had attacked Ali along with others over a business dispute.
The Thane sessions court had convicted Munna’s six associates and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
