NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Ernakulam district in Kerala on Sunday, as the southwest monsoon brought heavy rainfall to various parts of the state. The IMD also issued yellow alerts for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki and Wayanad districts, forecasting heavy rains in isolated places.
The Ernakulam district has been experiencing continuous downpours for several days, and the orange alert indicates the possibility of “very heavy rainfall” measuring between 11 cm and 20 cm in isolated areas.
The weather department also revised its predictions for the northern districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad, upgrading them from green to yellow alerts, which signify heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm.
Recent radar imagery suggests that Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to intense spells of rainfall and winds gusting up to 40 kmph in the coming hours.
As a result of the heavy rains and floods, 582 people from 182 families have been relocated to relief camps in Kottayam district, with a total of 33 camps opened across Kottayam, Kanjirappally, Vaikom, and Changanassery taluks. The Kottayam District Collector has declared a holiday for schools on Monday to facilitate the conversion of school buildings into relief camps.
The state disaster management authority has warned of potential landslides and mudslides in hilly areas due to the weather forecast and has advised people to move to safer locations if necessary. Those living in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging and those residing in dilapidated houses should also consider shifting to relief camps or safer places after assessing the rain situation. The authorities have strongly discouraged night travel through hilly areas.
