NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Wednesday that the battle against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is nearing its end, with a comprehensive strategy in place to dismantle the remaining terror networks. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Modi highlighted a significant decline in terror incidents in the Union Territory over the past decade.
“Terror and separatism are ending, and the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir are leading this fight,” Modi stated.”Our fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, in a way, is in its last stage, last leg. We are moving with a multi-pronged strategy to eliminate the remaining terror network there.”
During his response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, Modi reflected on the dark periods of shutdowns, strikes, terrorist threats, and bomb blast attempts that overshadowed democracy in the region for several decades. He praised the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their steadfast faith in the Constitution, particularly applauding the voters.
“This time, people have decided their fate with unwavering faith in the Constitution. I especially congratulate the voters of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Modi also noted a rise in tourism and investment activities, marking new records for the region. He emphasized that the voter turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir is set to break records from the past four decades.
“They accept the Constitution of India, the democracy of India, the Election Commission of India. This is a huge success,” Modi remarked.
In August 2019, the BJP-led NDA government abrogated Section 370 of the Constitution, which had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This move bifurcated the region into the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.
